Synopsis
Sitcom about the love-hate relationship between upper-class Audrey fforbes Hamilton and Richard DeVere, the nouveau rich businessman who buys her manor house when she can no longer afford to keep it.

Richard is chosen to star in a tv commercial as the quintessential English gentleman enjoying spirits at his country estate, but Audrey, who now knows Richard isn't English, reveals it to the producers and lands the starring role for herself.

Richard uses psychology to trick Audrey into organizing the annual Hunt Ball at Grantleigh, then becomes so distracted by ongoing business deals that he forgets to invite her to the Ball as his guest.

Audrey is appalled at Richard's plans to remodel the Manor, including his removal of the old fireplaces, though she never especially liked them and only wants a chance to lecture him about respecting history and "put him in his place" yet again.

Amanda Holden played Mel, the receptionist. Darren Boyd played the idiotic Craig, the travel agent downstairs.
During the series, both Craig and Douglas fall for Kate. Mel and Craig become romantically involved, but Douglas continues to be in love with Kate. Kate then falls for Douglas' brother, Iain Cameron, a successful cardiac surgeon.
It was written by Chris Langham and John Morton, who had collaborated on People Like Us.

The first episode sees sisters Tracey Stubbs and Sharon Theodopolopodos brought together when their husbands are sent to prison for armed robbery. Sharon, who lived in an Edmonton council flat, moves into Tracey's expensive house in Chigwell, Essex. Their next-door neighbour, and later friend, Dorien Green is a middle-aged married woman who is constantly having affairs with younger men. In the later series the location is changed to Hainault. The series ended on Christmas Eve 1998 after a 9-year-run.
