LKA-Hauptkommissarin Marie Blank soll die Ursache des Todes ermitteln, doch bei ihren Ermittlungen kommt ihr immer wieder Pater Simon Castell, ein Sonderbeauftragter des Vatikan, in die Quere, der sich ebenfalls für den Grund des Todes interessiert. Zunächst ermitteln Castell und Marie auf eigene Faust, doch schnell merken sie, dass sie nur gemeinsam der Aufklärung des Falls näher kommen: mit Castells Fachkenntnissen und Maries kriminalistischem Gespür.
