Messiah
Positioned between opera and theatre, this powerfully accessible interpretation of Handel’s seminal work explores the drama and struggle of faith, showing a bereaved community whose grief at the loss of their leader is transformed into hope through a narrative of resurrection. Inspired by early performances of the work, which were staged in theatres and concert halls rather than churches, including its first performance at Bristol Old Vic in 1782, it is a rare treat for connoisseurs and enthusiasts alike.
Verdi: Aida
With its cast of hundreds, thrilling score, and sweeping tale of love and heroics in ancient Egypt, Verdi’s Aida has long been a fixture on the stages of every major opera house in the world. For the 2018 revival of Sonja Frisell’s monumental production of this grand masterpiece, the Met assembled a truly all-star cast. Soprano Anna Netrebko takes on the title role for the first time at the Met, and mezzo-soprano Anita Rachvelishvili plays her rival, the conniving princess Amneris. Tenor Aleksandrs Antonenko is Radamès, the warrior that both women love, and Quinn Kelsey lends his robust baritone to Aida’s father, the fallen king Amonasro. Combining touching dramatizations of three of Kipling's most important works with distinguished contributions from his leading biographers, this is a truly remarkable portrait of one of the world's greatest writers. In Kipling's bedroom at his house Bateman's to this day are his son's cricket bat and his daughter's portrait.
Girls, Ghosts And War
Scenes of everyday life, episodes shot during journeys abroad: from New York (1986) to Asia through the Middle East (Egypt, Damascus and Palmyra in Syria, in the 1990's and 2000's). Added to these fragments of personal film, pictures taken from digital traffic: wars in the Middle East, the Arab Spring or Japanese pop icon, model, actor and singer Rie Miyazawa. The moving portraits of young women filmed by Ange Leccia haunt his films that are saturated with images of the violence of the world. A double focal point, sentimental and objective, a double urgency of desire and horror. Girls, Ghosts and War plays on two scenes, two planes: the young women in the background are blurred by the double exposure of the pictures of conflict. Pictorial conflicts, here and there mixed up in this ghostly maelstrom. As if the affective memory was constantly engulfed by the commotion of history.
The Girl Who Cannot Speak
'The Girl Who Cannot Speak' follows five women's true stories of sexual abuse. We began this project by meeting with women from all different backgrounds, ages, and walks of life. The level of sincerity, depth, and trust that is cultivated in this documentary is nothing short of impressive. Each woman has been involved with the Lenox Hill Women's Shelter in New York city. As the project moves forward we meet Charlotte a 13 year old girl who's story is depicted through visual images. She never speaks. Charlotte's image is a metaphor of innocence that ties all the women's unique stories together.
