Exposure of War

There were 258 of them: almost every one was wounded, every second was seriously injured, and every fifth died on the front line during filming. They did not just have to face the horrors of war, they were able to find the strength to learn how to work in this new cruel reality. They were able, at the cost of their own lives, to capture on film and pass on to the future generation the heroic feat of the entire Soviet people.

Native Animals

Each character, from a porcine union-jack doting politician to a phone-addicted white cat, stand in as an archetype in the UK’s political landscape as it considers its exit from the European Union. Set apart on independent monitors, these anthropomorphized incarnations menace one another through tacit acts of ridicule in a perpetually cycling theatre, falling between farcical and cruel. Maclean points us to the mechanisms of belonging and nativeness at play in the performance of national identity.

People's singer, songwriter, and Maoist cultural leader Khusiram Pakhrin's musical journey through nearly 4 decades of political movements and revolution in Nepal. This is the first film about Nepal's revolutionary singersongwriter Khusiram Pakhrin, and so far the only film that focuses on the songs of Nepal's Maoist movement. From the 1980s through 2006, their live performances were often banned and rarely photographed or recorded; hence we rely on Khusiram Pakhrin and his fellow performers for oral history and rare photos and footage of underground performances.

The Second Journey (To Uluru)
As the camera moves gently from afar into the very heart of the monolith, the magic of the holiest site of the Aborigines unfolds in shimmering nuances of light. Shot at different times of day, the close-up and panorama shots of this more than 500-million-year-old stone formation combine silence and acoustically altered birdsong to convey a feeling of timelessness into which a sense of loss is also inscribed. The somnambulistic moonrise in the great sky seems almost like an abstract painting and yet it is real. The areas of discolouration in the film material caused by problems in the developing process were deliberately left in the film as a metaphor for the looming threat to this natural environment through bushfires and tourism.
Gogol Doc
Ukraine is hardly visible on the map of the world. At the same time, it is one of the very few countries that have a positive image of future. There is no festival like GOGOLFEST in the whole world. It takes place every year since 2007 in Ukraine. The festival is established by Vlad Troitskyi, a Ukrainian director, screenwriter, actor and the founder of Dakh Theatre. GOGOLFEST breaks the old way of thinking and shatters the ferrous curtain of ghosts of the past. His task is to resume the tradition of the avant-garde.

Becoming Black
In the 1960s, a white couple living in East Germany tells their dark-skinned child that her skin color is merely a coincidence. As a teenager, she accidentally discovers the truth. Years before, a group of African men came to study in a village nearby. Sigrid, an East German woman, fell in love with Lucien from Togo and became pregnant. But she was already married to Armin. The child is Togolese-East German filmmaker Ines Johnson-Spain. In interviews with Armin and others from her childhood years, she tracks the astonishing strategies of denial her parents, striving for normality, developed following her birth. What sounds like fieldwork about social dislocation becomes an autobiographical essay film and a reflection on themes such as identity, social norms and family ties, viewed from a very personal perspective.
