Strauss: Die Fledermaus
Strauss: Die Fledermaus
“’Forget the irreparable’, was the axiom by which the Habsburg monarchy approached its own demise. The despondency of those twilight years could but infiltrate the gaiety of operetta.” So wrote Claudio Magris about Die Fledermaus, a singularly unsettling work with its maelstrom of mistaken identities, dancing and drinking. In 1944, Die Fledermaus was one of the works performed at the Theresienstadt Concentration Camp where some of Europe’s best musicians were held captive by the Nazis. Inspired by this setting, Célie Pauthe draws on the salutary frivolity that brings the work to life and the force of collective resistance it inspired.

A Florida Melancholy
A Florida Melancholy
At the beginning of the summer of 2018, filmmaker Eli Hayes, who has been struggling with depression for his entire life, fell deep into the inky chasms of the disease. Days later, Hayes was called down to Tallahassee, Florida for a job opportunity. While in Florida, the despondency grew more severe and eventually took complete control of his psychological well-being. Over the course of the summer, good days would occur sparsely and sporadically; on these days, Hayes would bring his camera outside to film the beauty of his environment, despite knowing full well that the dejection would soon return. "A Florida Melancholy" is a landscape film of emotional survival, comprised of the footage that Hayes shot while in Florida throughout the darkest season of his life, during which all that he could rely on for hope & direction were his camera, and his surroundings.

Berlioz: Les Troyens
Berlioz: Les Troyens
In 1854, Hector Berlioz confided in his memoirs that, “For three years, I have been tormented by the idea of a vast opera for which I would like to write both words and music.” Held back by the failures of Benvenuto Cellini and La Damnation de Faust, the composer was to wait another two years before throwing himself into Les Troyens, an enterprise based on Virgil’s Aeneid: an ancient text that, galvanised by the master’s brilliant orchestral modernity, breathed new life into an operatic world still dominated by Verdi. In 1990, when the curtain rose for the first time at the Opéra Bastille, it revealed the Trojan plains. Thirty years later, a new production directed by Dmitri Tcherniakov marks the anniversary of the opera house, revealing the work in all its immensity.
