Città Giardino
Sicilian summer. Città Giardino's immigrant help centre is a dilapidated building located between mountains and factories. Città Giardino is closing down and its only inhabitants are six boys between 14 and 18 years old. They came from Africa, traveled across the desert and the sea and are now waiting for a visa. The days are all the same, between sleep, meals and eternal immersion in their smartphones. The heat, frustration and boredom paralyse the children, under the watchful eye of a watchman who supervises them. Even a visit from a journalist cannot break the monotony: he comes to interview the young people but the words are hard to come by. No one wants to talk about himself. Omar trains in a makeshift gym, Jallow seeks refuge on his tablet, Jelimakan ora. Only Sahid, the newest, seems determined to break the paralysis: he is planning an escape.
Song of a Seer
Haitian poet, critic and actor Dominique Batraville rummages through a library of literature and curios while drifting between recitations, musings and memories in a hypnotic stream of consciousness. “Zombie Drug” - The Truth About Flakka
A few years ago, a new synthetic drug called Flakka appeared in Florida. It wasn’t long before viral videos and sensationalized news reports of alleged Flakka overdoses started to spread across the internet, and people began comparing its effects to that of a zombie outbreak. One supposed incident involved a person who allegedly ate off a homeless man’s face on the side of a highway. The drug’s effects are often compared to that of bath salts, and include hallucinations, “superhuman" strength, and a state of “excited delirium” that is credited with driving the lunatic actions of some users. However, Flakka can be easily altered or changed, and reports have emerged that its recent incarnation has surfaced under a slightly new chemical—and just as dangerous—structure. Kishon
Ephraim Kishon is perhaps best known for directing Sallah Shabati, a film that garnered multiple awards and put Israeli cinema on the world stage. But Kishon is first and foremost a satirist and writer whose books and plays have been translated into over 40 languages and have earned him the Israel Prize. This documentary paints an intimate portrait of the legendary artist - a Hungarian Holocaust survivor and immigrant to the fledgling state of Israel - through interviews, archival footage, animation and in-depth conversations. The result is a captivating film that highlights Kishon’s acerbic wit, playful approach to language and above all, his zest for life.
