With so many myths and rumors flying around about the place lately, we decided to do a little research of our own into the claims... which turned into a whole lot of research... and what was going to be a 10-minute video turned into this.
The Valley of Salt
Raised by a Swiss mother and an Egyptian father, both Christians, the filmmaker Christophe Magdy Saber learned to grow up feeling different in an eminently Muslim country. There, the religious activities of his parents always found a stumbling block, but never someone in the family imagined that the life of any of them could at a moment be in danger for it. Portrayed through the filmmaker's small handheld camera, the Egypt after the Mubarak regime appears as an anarchic place, where anything can happen at any time. This is the feeling emanating from the filmmaker's imperfect images when he returns from Switzerland, where he studies filmmaking, to visit his parents, who face a death threat for allegedly having converted an Egyptian man to Christianity.

Lee Nan-young, who is famous for ‘Tears in Mokpo,’ made her debut at OK Records in the 1930s, and married Kim Hae-song, an acclaimed, genius composer at that time. In the year of liberation in 1945, 'KPK Musical Troupe' won popularity with the duo of Lee Nan-young and Kim Hae-song, but Kim got kidnapped by North Korea. During the Korean War, Lee made Korea’s first girl vocal group ‘Kim Sisters’ with her daughters Suk-ja, Ae-ja and her niece Min-ja who inherited their parents’ musical talent. Thanks to Lee’s desperate effort and intense training, ‘Kim Sisters’ gained popularity at the American 8th Army base. They got all the way to Las Vegas, USA for the first time as Asians, showing strong appeal to American public. Min-ja of ‘Kim Sisters’ is still working as a singer in Budapest, Hungary. The audience can meet the three shy girls who fluently sang songs in English without even knowing the language, through the memories of Min-ja in the film.

The catastrophic eruption of the Chichonal volcano in 1982 triggered a process of territorial displacement, loss of language and the dispersion of knowledge of the Zoque cosmogony. The film links the process of reconstruction and fighting of the Esquipulas Guayabal community--located 5 kilometers from the crater of the volcano--with the complex cosmogony of volcanic regions. This collaboration between two visual artists and a Zoque poet from Guayabal community, seeks to trigger a process of sensory ethnography and audiovisual experimentation, that manifest the strong relationship between the historical process of the community life and the volcano activity that has increased recently. The historical link between humans and volcanoes acquires a visual-cinematographic form of territorial redefinition and renewal of volcanic imaginaries, leaving aside the melancholy of what has been lost. The film embodies the genesis of a new way of living and conceiving the volcano.
