What The Heart Wants
Unraveling the value of emotion in contemporary society, the work of Belgian-American artist Cécile B. Evans explores the person-to-machine exchanges that have come to define the contemporary human condition. Her video installation What the Heart Wants examines what constitutes a person in the digital age and how machines (technical, social, and political) shape how we are “human.” If “corporations are people too,” as in the notion of corporate personhood, then HYPER, an ambiguous power and the narrator of the video, has achieved this ultimate goal. Amidst the dizzying paradoxes of future-turned-now, she is joined by a range of other protagonists: an immortal cell, a memory from 1972 that has outlived the humans who would have remembered it, a disbanded trio of off-grid lovers, lab children with their robot caregiver, and a workers’ collective comprised entirely of disembodied ears.

La La La La
La La La La is the result of a collaboration with the NHS psychiatrist and leading Dementia specialist, Professor Julian Hughes, University of Bristol, RICE Professor of Old Age Psychiatry. La La La La asks questions about the rights of elderly individuals with dementia, living in care: What does it mean to be a citizen if you are dependent and living in care? How can people authentically and without prejudice express themselves while suffering from dementia and/or Alzheimers? What role does artmaking play within the care home environment? Many hours of audio interviews were conducted by myself and Dr. Mabel Lie, ethnographer attached to the project, to carry out this research. La La La La features five residents, who live in a care home for people with dementia. The hours of interviews and recordings have been collaged together to present multiple narratives simultaneously. Fragmentation, overlapping: a conflux of information, visually and aurally, collide in this work.

Steven Wilson: To the Bone
“My fifth record is in many ways inspired by the hugely ambitious progressive pop records that I loved in my youth (think Peter Gabriel’s So, Kate Bush’s Hounds of Love, Talk Talk’s Colour of Spring and Tears for Fears’ Seeds of Love). Lyrically, the album’s eleven tracks veer from the paranoid chaos of the current era in which truth can apparently be a flexible notion, observations of the everyday lives of refugees, terrorists and religious fundamentalists, and a welcome shot of some of the most joyous wide-eyed escapism I’ve created in my career so far. Something for all the family!”– Steven Wilson Tracklist: To the Bone, Nowhere Now, Pariah, The Same Asylum as Before, Refuge, Permanating, Blank Tapes, People Who Eat Darkness, Song of I, Detonation, Song of Unborn
