Afrofuturism
Afrofuturism is not a sub-genre. For some, like Sun Ra, Afrofuturism (though the term was not coined until after Sun Ra passed away) is a form of escapism; a reprieve from violent systems of segregation and white supremacy. For others, Afrofuturism is a celebration of black innovation; filmmaker and author Ytasha Womack describes Afrofuturism as, “The intersection between black culture, technology, liberation, and the imagination, with some mysticism thrown in, too.” For some it is highly spiritual. Above all else, it is an ambitious vision of the future and mankind’s place in it that is continually informed by black culture and history.

The Pier [Like Mending Glass]
The filmmaker’s grandfather, suffering from Alzheimer’s, remembers, obsessively, an episode from his youth: an elegant young woman climbs over the railing of the pier and jumps into the water; he saves her. The old man’s speech becomes more confused; the women of his family repeat the story, now become mythical, using re-speaking techniques inspired by “verbatim theater”; the filmmaker reconstructs the scene, casting a young woman whose blonde chignon brings to mind Vertigo’s Madeleine. Yet the moment comes when the grandfather has to be brought to a nursing home, where, gradually, he fades away. His mind, his breathing, fly away with the passing time, along the flowing water. The last image that stays with him, is that of the pier…

The Centaur's Nostalgia

'A Family Quartet' follows this musical family for two years and highlights the unique relationships that arise from the exceptional talent of Noa. Simultaneously 'A Family Quartet' is also a coming of age film about two sensitive girls in puberty, each seeking their own path in life.

In the Beauce region, perched eight metres above the ground for a week, two men are using sheer arm strength to move a strange vehicle along a concrete viaduct, the remains of the test course from the Aérotrain monorail. The handcar, affectionately nicknamed Albertine, moves at 2 or 3 km/h, when it is not broken down. Why are they pumping? We have no idea at all. Neither do they. The movement is repeated, monotonous, like this tree-less agricultural landscape broken by the horizontal line formed by this concrete structure, which has never served any purpose apart from feeding modernist dreams that now belong to the past. The challenge of this Dadaist road movie speaks for itself, even if it does not have the spectacular nature of an ascent of Everest. In the same manner, it resumes the whole absurdity of the human condition.
