The artist Cildo Meireles in search of the sound of Brazil's main water basins in order to construct the sound sculpture Rio:Oir (River:Hear) created from the play on words and concepts. From Foz do Iguaçu to the Pororoca of Macapá, from the Águas Emendadas Park to the mouth of the São Francisco river, and later, in a studio, gathering the pieces and matching them to the cacophony of residual waters and human laughter.
The documentary "Listening to the River" reveals the artist's simplicity, the relation of region's inhabitants with water, and it enhances our perception between sound and image.

Once upon a time, in almost every industrial city, countless rivers flowed. We built houses along their banks. Our roads hugged their curves. And their currents fed our mills and factories. But as cities grew, we polluted rivers so much that they became conduits for deadly waterborne diseases like cholera, which was 19th century's version of the Black Plague. Evil awaits us in the rainforest, where wild animals and poisonous snakes lurk. Rising wafts of fog appear as if emanations from hell. But, do they really exist – the evil spirits of the rainforest? Is the fog in the high cloud forests really the breath of the underworld? On our expedition we encounter the animals of the cloud forest and the mountain rainforests. We witness the birth of peccaries and listen in on the early morning concert of howler monkeys, in their impressive habitat beneath the canopy of the rainforest.
