Giri Chit
GIRI CHIT tells a tale of the subtle trace of irreconcilable worlds. A worker driving a mobile sweeper in hypnotic circles across an already immaculate surface. The high drama of cosplay aficionados clamoring to be seen. A cast of thousands toiling hundreds of feet above the street. Giri translates as ‘duty’ in Japanese, but the concept is in fact far more complicated. Giri is a sort of interpersonal political capital that informs careers, family relations, and much more. Its presence and flow is palpable in Japan, where this film was shot. A “giri chit” then may be a hypothetical voucher for this intangible flow (with a tip of the cap to Thomas Pynchon’s “Vineland”). Selected Screenings and Awards: DaVinci Film Festival (Best Experimental Film), Chicago Underground Film Festival, Athens International Film and Video Festival, Dallas Videofest, ICDOCS Film Festival, NewFilmmakers at Anthology Film Archives, Oxford Film Festival, Director’s Lounge Berlin

Unfortunately, after a year goes by they find they have yet to connect, having gone separate ways, dealing with various "day jobs," an oddly intrusive neighbor, or theatre productions gone horribly, and hilariously, wrong. It takes the playwright in the group, who has finally developed enough angst to complete his latest work, to persuade them to take a risk, get the band back together, and produce his original play.

De verloren stad
Whereas most filmmakers go to places where it is all happening, documentary director Britta Hosman went to a place where nothing happens. For one year, she captured life in the Bosnian town of Bosanska Grahavo, which was forgotten during the reconstruction and where only the supermarket and ten pubs are still standing. When did the war end for them, the filmmaker wonders. Did it ever end? And which people stayed put? And why? The many conversations Hosman had with the inhabitants were converted to a narrative voice-over that wryly describes how everybody wakes up every day, gets dressed and proceeds to wait for nothing at all.
Deuren naar de ziel
An eye blinks close to the camera lens. This is followed by the image of an ear. Someone tastes food, another uses his nose, looking for a specific smell. A couple of massaging hands work bare skin. The film follows people who use their senses to get an idea or a sensation. The composer utilises his hearing to draw inspiration from everyday sounds. A passionate cook tastes his dishes until he is satisfied. A 'corpse sniffer' deploys his keen sense of smell to locate missing victims of criminal acts. The astronomer uses strong lenses to search the star system for new elements, while a blind man threads his way through traffic. Chaotic city noises accompany an image of what he can barely see. His tactile sense is miraculously strong. The occasional voice-over complements this ingeniously edited exploration of sensory perceptions.

Neighbor by Neighbor: Mobilizing an Invisible Community in Lewiston, Maine
In the summer of 2004, the Mayor of Lewiston, Maine announced a plan to develop a four-lane boulevard across downtown's low-income neighborhood. This project was called "The Heritage Initiative." Contrary to its name, this plan was going to eliminate the downtown's heritage by displacing 850 people from their homes as well as destroy playgrounds, vegetable gardens, and historic buildings. Moving residents out of the city and improving traffic flow was at the heart of this proposal... It was 1960's Urban Renewal all over again. As tragic as the circumstances were, the threat of a road destroying the neighborhood required residents to rise to the challenge of becoming *community organizers. This movie documents 5 years of development and community organizing in Lewiston. It's an exceptional story about the people of Lewiston, but it's also a universal story about the challenges faced by many urban neighborhoods across the United States.
