After losing her job, Mirjam decides to go away for some time, all by herself. She hopes to reach a better understanding of who she is and who she wants to be. But the trip turns out to be a challenge. Although she finds some peace in this isolation, she still suffers from the expectations and fears of a woman who just turned 30 and recently became unemployed. We follow her during her time in this Mediterranean town and see everything she reveals in her solitude.
Tugging Diary
Tugging Diary documents a footbridge over a year between August 2019 to January 2021. Due to social unrest and the uncertainty of various immediate happenings, both the internet and physical spaces act as critical communication platforms of its own during this period. As such, information can be circulated in the community more widely and rapidly outside of the existing mainstream media. As time goes by, these materials are continuously altered, some were renewed, while the others were removed, covered with paint, or overlaid by other information.

Though it is now slowly emptying, Ayukawa was once a thriving coastal community, its success based on a practice rooted in tradition, custom, and ceremony: whaling. Through the voices of local elders, the film conveys how that form of hunting developed into the lifeblood of the town before cultural changes, international condemnation, and strict regulation brought it to the brink of non-existence.
Make Sure the Sea Is Still There
My projects often come about from traveling, which was not possible in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, I attempted to travel vicariously through the webcams of the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration, capturing screenshots on my phone and editing them with videos I had recorded during the pandemic and on previous trips to Iceland. I found time and landscapes moving strangely, if at all—seeming to mirror our new reality of sudden isolation, tragedy, and the utter unknown.

Two Minutes to Midnight
What if women ruled the world? Yael Bartana stages the question in practice in her performative ‘Two Minutes to Midnight’, where a female government in a fictitious country must take a stand on an imminent nuclear threat from a foreign nation, led by the self-absorbed president Twittler. A panel of fictional characters and real female experts from areas such as defence, law, politics and psychology are tasked with agreeing on how to approach the situation in Bartana’s role play, which takes place in a democratic ‘Peace Room’, mirroring the toxically masculine ‘War Room’ in Stanley Kubrick’s classic Cold War satire, ‘Dr. Strangelove’. In the meantime, the clock is ticking, but when the red phone rings you can almost hear your own heartbeat.
Supply and a Million Times Goodbye
An auction house is a theatrical world of codes and gestures, which only the initiated understand. Here, works of art are put ‘under the hammer’ and change owners, as their artistic value is measured in monetary terms. With borderline absurd humour and an unusually sharp eye for the telling details, Majse Vilstrup records the dramaturgy of an auction and the symbolic exchange. At the same time, she studies those present as if they were a rare and surreal animal species. Her film is a warm and witty analysis of all the mechanisms through which works of art become objects that allow buyers to measure their status.

They are submerged in an environment which is removed from our daily reality associating sparkling fairy-tale dreams and horrible visions of drowning at the same time.

After living a childhood with high exposure to violence, through their words, young people tell us their feelings about their construction of being young, they talk about their day to day in one of the many neighborhoods thrown into the periphery in the Metropolitan Area of Monterrey, economic capital of Mexico, which has under its progress the shadow of high rates of juvenicides, femicides, drug trafficking and the unstoppable consumption of drugs.

"How to Make Kimchi (or How to Be Korean)" is incidentally not a film about how to make kimchi. Weaving together archives and intimate homemade footage the piece rests itself on the anchor of family. Through this anchor point the past is explored and reconciled with imagery from the Korean War and ideas of nationality are questioned and probed. What does it mean to be Korean? What does it mean to be American? Will I lose all my connection to my Koreanness when my parents pass? Wrestling with these questions, the piece acts as a patchwork, picking up and stitching together folk tales, family dialogue and the past, hoping with an open honesty and love to find answers to the question of belonging.
Dysphoric: Fleeing Womanhood Like a House on Fire
‘Dysphoric’ is a documentary on the rise of Gender Identity Ideology and its effects on women and girls - especially in developing countries. The film explores gender transition, the permanent medical side-effects of hormones and surgeries, the propaganda by 'woke' corporations that glorifies thousands of stereotypical gender presentations coalesced as fashion, a surge in pronoun policing, language hijacking that calls women ‘menstruators’, and the many hurdles women face while trying to question this modern-day misogyny. The film amplifies the voices of detransitioners, clinicians, psychiatrists, sociologists, feminists, academics and concerned citizens.

When his partner, artist Martha Fleury, is diagnosed with an aggressive form of ovarian cancer, he folds her threatening tumour into his installations as well. Creating works of various scales, including defunct animatronic figures from a decommissioned Ontario Place amusement ride, he evokes a sense of wonder and awe.
