Makarìa

The Weather Diaries
The flying foxes that soar across Sydney each evening face many challenges: impacted by heatwaves, evicted from urban parklands, struggling to survive an ongoing loss of habitat. Bat carers save a handful here and there, and ecologists document their struggles, as threats escalate. Filmed over six years, The Weather Diaries reaches its climax in 2020, as temperatures soar, bushfires rage, and flying fox pups die in record numbers. Drayton ruminates on our failure to value these essential pollinators and the forests they sustain, and reflects on the implications for her daughter Imogen, a girl long inspired by Studio Ghibli’s Princess Mononoke, who’s emerging from the classical confines of the Conservatorium High School to embark on a career as an electronic pop artist.
Obāchan
Obāchan is Japanese. She left her native archipelago in 1941 to marry one of her compatriots, 17 years older, settled in Mexico. Through fragments of family films, manga and sequences that she has shot, Nicolasa Ruiz sculpts a complex and delicate memory landscape between the two shores of the Pacific.

In 1942, the Ural Volunteer Tank Corps entered the battle on the Oryol-Kursk Bulge. It is the only corps in the world created with money collected on a voluntary basis. Those who assembled these tanks fought in it. The competition for the right to fight in the corps was 14 people per seat. In the first battles at Oryol, every third soldier of almost 3,000 Perm soldiers died. Such was the bitter price of the victory. After the Kursk Bulge, Perm tankers took part in the liberation of Lvov, Poland, Berlin, Prague. Who are they, Perm participants of these battles? What did they look like, what did they think and what did they dream about?

Character One: Susan
Susan is a glamorous train wreck: a delusional drug-addict and psychotic who compares herself to the likes of Maria Callas, Romy Schneider, Monica Bellucci and Désirée Nick. Her childhood ended when she was sexually abused for the first time at the age of 11. Even though she has a strong personality and speaks five languages fluently, she was never able to take care of herself. In the 1990s, she became one of the IT Girls of the post-reunification party scene in Berlin. She only feels safe among gay men. Decades of drug-abuse may have destroyed her brain, but not her personality.

A House in Pieces
A war between government and ISIS-affiliated jihadists in Marawi, Philippines, forced hundreds of thousands to flee from their homes. After the war, residents struggle to rebuild their homes and lives in a deformed city. The film unfolds as an emotional journey weaving together the stories of its protagonists over a period of two years. Displaced couple Yusop and Farhanna and their children yearn for freedom, income, and comfort after returning to their city. But even to return to normalcy is already a struggle. Nancy, a once wealthy woman, has to cope with her loss of home in an evacuation shelter where she will have to remain for years. An anonymous driver with striking insights shuttles back and forth between places and stories around a city which will never be the same again.

With the hair clipper sound as background noise, they talk about girls, first loves, the difficulties they face daily, defining episodes in their lives, as well as stereotypes they admit to embodying as male-identifying persons. Stylistically, the film hovers between amateurish and avant- garde, much like Butch’s own music and career. Amateur on Plastic also parallels the 1990’s era of the seminal indie label Teen-Beat.
