Down By The Riverside
“If there’s hope for the human race, there’s hope for the Hudson.” —Pete Seeger In the summer of 1969, legendary folk singer Pete Seeger launched the Clearwater, a 19th-century-style sloop with a singing crew of musicians and activists. His intention was to raise awareness of pollution in the Hudson River and to petition legislation that addressed the then-burgeoning climate crisis. Over 50 years later, the Clearwater remains an interactive environmental classroom—or, in its builder’s words, “a carnival, museum, and showboat all wrapped into one.” Featuring rare interviews with Seeger himself, Down by the Riverside is a beautiful, stirring tribute to the communities of people who continue to restore and preserve this elegant symbol of the Hudson Valley. Lachit: The Warrior
Lachit (The Warrior), is an audio-visual documentary on Lachit Barphukan, the greatest Assamese General of the Ahom dynasty. It traces the genesis of the military commander’s ancestry, his charismatic personality, physical prowess, resolute valor, his dexterous skills in diplomacy, his incredible formulations of strategies for naval warfare, and most importantly, his unwavering sense of patriotism. The documentary chronologically narrates the unfolding of events, starting from Lachit’s launching of a series of onslaughts against the invading Mughals, which starts with the battle of Alaboi and decisively ends in the battle of Saraighat, where the Mughals were vanquished.
Last Meet
The film revolves around an old and aged Dwijamani who is bed ridden in his family home in a village near Dalu river. His younger sister from Guwahati, who is aged herself, visits him with her son. The story is about the filmmaker visiting his maternal village home in the year 2016 with his mother. In their last few days of togetherness, they all bond well as they laugh, eat and talk about the village and its people. After staying for few days, Dwijamani’s sister and her son leave Dwijamani and his village abode. The film is about their last meeting.

Lumene: Privatisation
In this documentary essay, Congolese artist David Shongo addresses the problems of knowledge production and asks the important question of how it was influenced permanently and systematically by colonialist power. Analysing historical photographs, he exposes the perfidious mechanisms of colonial historiography and contrasts them with conversations with traditional scholars. They represent an exploited culture confronted not only with the theft of economic goods. It was also robbed – in a historical dimension, too – of self-perception and self-determination.

Eat Bitter

And as if all this wasn’t bad enough, their relationships to their wives are falling apart. ‘Eat Bitter’ mirrors the existential and mundane problems of the two men, while an unlikely friendship and mutual trust blossoms between them. However, the chaotic microcosm of the construction site also mirrors China’s contradictory role in 21st century Africa, with the bank itself as the ultimate symbol of money, power and illusion. Director duo Pascale Appora-Gnekindy and Ningyi Sun themselves represent each of the two cultures, and their film has a unique eye for the human fallibility and irony of it all, but also for how we can reach each other despite all our many differences.
