Istvan (Atlan) Mandoki Konyr is an outstanding Turkologist of the 20th century, the founder of European Kypchak studies, the author of unique works on the history, culture and language of the Turkic peoples. He died at a creative peak in 1992. The Kazakhs called him "Konyr". This name became symbolic in Kazakh society in the 80-90s of the last century.
