William McKeown: Between Heaven and Earth

Art Through Our Eyes

Newfoundland at Armageddon
On July 1st, 1916, the Newfoundland Regiment took part in a massive First World War offensive on the Somme, led by the British. At Beaumont Hamel the regiment was nearly wiped out, as only 110 of 780 soldiers survived the day. To commemorate its 100th anniversary, Brian McKenna’s documentary film tells the story of this epic tragedy. Using a technique that brings new meaning to reenactment, McKenna recruits descendants of soldiers who fought this battle, offering them a unique opportunity to relive the experience of their ancestors in trenches built specifically for the film.

Prison Sisters
PRISON SISTERS takes us through the journey of two young women who have been released from prison in Afghanistan. Outside prison, the respite they experienced in prison is replaced with death threats and violence. As women and former inmates, Sara and Najibeh lacks any right to exist. Sara's uncle intends to kill her an attempt to reclaim his honor in their small village. Fearing for her life Sara escapes to Sweden she applies for asylum but Najibeh stays behind. While Sara struggles to understand her newfound freedom, her prison-mate Najibeh disappears and soon Sara hears that she was stoned to death. Sara and the filmmaker want to find out the truth, only to encounter a maze of half- truths on the streets of Afghanistan. In her film, young director Leonor Teles weaves the life circumstance of Romani in Portugal today with the recollections of a yesterday. As a third pillar, she establishes an active applied performance art that becomes integrated in the cinematic narrative. The shooting of the film took place in Buryatia - a South-Eastern part of Russia that is considered the center of Buddhism in Russia. In the fictional story a Moscow actress comes to faraway Buryatia to find the man she once loved. She is terminally ill and Buryatia gives her a second chance, she does not believe in miracles, but miracle happens. The real actress Julia Aug, like her character, is also in Buryatia for the first time. The documentary, filmed during the shooting of the film, shows the real Julia's feelings and experiences while she discovers the unique atmosphere, nature and culture of Buryatia.
