Sine die
Sine die
In 1966, a U.S. B-52 bomber and a tanker plane crashed into each other over the village of Palomares in southern Spain. The plutonium in the bombs carried by the B-52 was spread over a wide area, and today it still lies buried 20 feet underground, surrounded by desert landscapes and fenced enclosures. This has major health implications for the local people, including filmmaker Camila Moreiras. The Spanish landscape and Moreiras’s body come together in parallel stories of recovery and survival—land and body alike must adapt, whatever the cost.

The Pump
As Scottish poet Ivor Cutler muses, in Jamie Kane's "The Pump": 'Gravity begins at home.' Kane's film grapples with premonition and what you miss when you lose everything. The gaping absence of one’s own house swallowed by nature through a flooded mine shaft is told through a personal account of the events. Objects from the rubble, outside structures and interior details map such loss against the impermanence of possessions.

Gjama
Gjama
“Gjama” is a rarely practiced mourning ritual that was performed by Albanian men throughout the centuries. By shouting specific phrases and acting out a strict choreography, it is a way of paying respect to the deceased but also overcoming grief and pain over the loss of a loved one. Through the documentation of the re-enactment of the ritual, Zgjim Elshani seeks to recover fragments of the practice in the communities where this form of collective grieving is still a way of overcoming loss. By doing so, the project intends to rethink collective grieving and what it means to publicly display emotions in a male-headed society.

Port Park City
Port Park City
Port Park City (港口+园区+城市) visually documents fragments of the industrial topography of Shenzhen and the Pearl River Delta in China. This documentary film narrates Shenzhen’s young history, centring on its role in supplying mass-manufacture and labour organisation to global markets, and their hand in catalysing its urban development, which is now in a phase of deindustrialisation. Composed of found footage, pre-recorded footage, sound recordings, and the voices of poet Zheng Xiaoqiong, local artists, researchers and scholars, this film allows frictions between workers’ rights and the waves of development facilitated by modern industrial logistics to unfold.

The World of Mindfulness
The World of Mindfulness
During the pandemic, the filmmaker’s son found himself stuck at home for a very long time. Ying Liang watched him cut out a portrait of Abbas Kiarostami from a book, and create a face mask on the face of the Iranian filmmaker. Liang observes how his son builds a ‘world’ on his bed, makes a paper airplane, and flies various places with his new friend Abbas Kiarostami. After spending the whole day flying, he falls asleep on that same bed with the family’s kitten. In his dreams, he uses the ‘magic’ he has learned from an online magic course to remove the face mask. With The World of Mindfulness, Chinese filmmaker Liang – who is now living in Hong Kong – creates a marvellously simple piece about the world of childhood, adding a touch of playful cinephilia.

Revolution 0
Revolution 0
The film was built around «a musical composition about (im)possibilities», a collaboration between a Moscow-based sonic artist Stas Sharifullin and Rupert Clervaux, a contemporary English poet, composer and sound engineer. The piece and lyrics itself have become a starting point for the final artwork: a study of borderlines between the mechanisms of recognition and non-recognition where abstractions are being intertwined with concrete images, and personal memories are being blended with the thoughts of the global. The film contains footages from the director's personal family archive, as well as sequences created with some experimental video and animation techniques. Thus, the "private" forms the "poetic", weaving the fabric of the film's narrative.

How to Make Kimchi (or How to Be Korean)
How to Make Kimchi (or How to Be Korean)
"How to Make Kimchi (or How to Be Korean)" is incidentally not a film about how to make kimchi. Weaving together archives and intimate homemade footage the piece rests itself on the anchor of family. Through this anchor point the past is explored and reconciled with imagery from the Korean War and ideas of nationality are questioned and probed. What does it mean to be Korean? What does it mean to be American? Will I lose all my connection to my Koreanness when my parents pass? Wrestling with these questions, the piece acts as a patchwork, picking up and stitching together folk tales, family dialogue and the past, hoping with an open honesty and love to find answers to the question of belonging.
