One of Us
Niina Vuorisara’s experimental documentary short One of Us takes a harrowing journey to memories of a childhood riddled with sibling violence. “It’s hard to talk about these things. But this is how I see it, how things went – and how I remember them,” the director’s own voice tells on the soundtrack. In the images, a sister sits on a hearse alongside the coffin of her brother who committed suicide. Archival material, fictional and animated scenes blend on the trip to the past moving on the limits of fiction and documentary.
Passu
Jussi Lehtomäki and Mete Sasioglu’s film takes a fresh look at the reality of a racialised young activist in Finland. As the documentary starts, its lead character, Pazilaiti Simayijiang aka Passu, is only 18 years old. Still, she is already doing a lot: she is an activist, a podcast host, a high schooler, and the vice president and one of the founders of the Feminist Party.

Having experienced ups and downs in his life, the painter describes the transience of life wistfully. Wuorila-Stenberg ponders on aging, death, and loneliness, but also the greatest joys of his life, like love. “I know that life is a big secret,” he says.

The Idaho Murders: Trial by TikTok
When four University of Idaho students were murdered by an unknown attacker in November 2022, Zara McDermott first read about it on social media. The small American college town of Moscow is home to just 25,000 people, most of them students, and hasn’t seen a homicide in seven years. For six weeks, the police said they had no suspects, no motive, no weapon, and had found no signs of forced entry into the house. Zara heads to Moscow to find out how much of what she saw online was even real, and how much was pure speculation. She meets the true crime sleuths making thousands of hours of social media content on this case to find out why they felt the need to post their own interpretation, and why people were so keen to listen to them rather than the network news or the police. Zara also speaks to those who were affected by the rumours spread online and sees the impact this social media storm has had, leading her to question her own role in the tragedy.

The actor meets a 'chaser', a man who doesn’t take PrEP – a medication which prevents HIV from getting into the body – in his quest to contract the virus. He also interviews another man, a so-called ‘gifter’ with a detectable viral load, who is happy to transmit the virus to willing recipients. More than four decades since the first HIV diagnosis, the virus still has the potential to cause serious illness, so why do those within the ‘bug chasing’ community embrace it?

The Cambridgeshire Crucifixion
In 2017, a routine archaeological dig is taking place on the site of a proposed housing development in the village of Fenstanton in the Cambridgeshire Fens. When human remains are found alongside a variety of Roman artefacts, none of the team at Albion Archaeology see anything out of the ordinary. But once the bones are washed back at HQ, something highly unusual is uncovered: a nail through the heelbone of one of the individuals. Could this be evidence of a Roman crucifixion? When they do some research, they find that only one confirmed example has ever been unearthed before, discovered in the 1960s in Jerusalem. To find out more, they call in renowned Osteoarchaeologist Dr Corinne Duhig to investigate.

The In Between

She collides with unruly experiences of adolescence – quinceañeras, Rio Grande river excursions, teen makeovers and beyond – that invite her to soak up the details of the home her brother adored and she ignored. What emerges is a playful dance between a personal and collective coming-of-age portrait of kids on the border and Robie herself as she rediscovers the possibilities of joy in the aftermath of grief.
