Their Heads are Green and Their Hands are Blue
Their Heads are Green and Their Hands are Blue
In 1959, expatriate American writer Paul Bowles published Their Heads Are Green, Their Hands are Blue, a collection of travel essays largely drawn from a three-year journey through Morocco to meet the country’s tribes and record their music. Fifty years later, directors Karim Debbagh and Jay Bulgur retrace his steps, capturing many of the same pieces of music – which are handed down from one generation to the next – on film. A mysterious soundscape of musical rituals, dealing with fertility, birth, circumcision, grief, coming of age, marriage, divorce, life, death and art, it is both a historical record and, thanks to the elevating nature of the music, food for the soul.

Fragments to Céline
Between the first and second waves of COVID-19, Nikolas Candido "wrote" an audiovisual letter to his friend. In a series of obscured fragments, he captures the changing mood of Rio de Janeiro with a digital 8mm camera. Although on the surface, life goes on as normal, the city is slowly sinking into darkness. Just like the whole country, where up to 4,000 people died every day during the most critical stage of the fight against the virus.

OK Good, Pinega
OK Good, Pinega
The vast territories beside the Pinega river in northwest Russia are covered by woods and inhabited by more wild animals than people, besides a few villages who live mostly from the forests, fishing, and gardening. Society here can only be described as a matriarchy, where beliefs, spells, and traditional rituals are passed down the female line. Musical contributions from village residents serve as a leitmotif for the film: unsteady renditions of old songs that reveal performances belonging to a distant past. The population of these communities has aged considerably — but the place itself is timeless.

Many of the youngest died on the way, others died later from starvation, disease and over work in the Soviet camps. Some of the deported children survived and returned to Latvia, others remained in Siberia for their whole lives. Teach Me
Teach Me
Children at UK schools with individual special educational needs (SEN) make up 14.9% of the student population (a figure that is predicted to rise). So it raises questions to why the education system isn’t adapting to meet these needs? And, how does it feel to be one of these kids stuck in an institution which isn’t accommodating you? Teach Me as a documentary sets out to understand these experiences in the present moment from children who are at the age when school makes up a large portion of their daily experiences. The documentary interviews four children all ages 12 and 13 and each of them with individual and overlapping SEN. Using childlike paper cut-outs and school supplies to form a stylish stop motion that transports you into the world/mind of Dan, Lydia, Martha and Annie.

Another Horizon
The horizon, where the sky and the earth meet, is always elsewhere, a promised place where these two elements come together. a metaphor, an orienting, a promise of transition, change, transcendence. a place where the corporeal and spiritual meet, or are cleaved apart. Also, here, the space between narrative and documentary, fact and fiction, is scratched between two voices. Jayne love reads a text i wrote for her, short sentences on the concept of the horizon and the briefest suggestion of narrative collide with pieces of Richard (Oswan) Williams' beautiful, rum-fueled living room sermons to me.
