Bellezza, addio
In the mid-1990s, news broke that poet Dario Bellezza - who was friends with Sandro Penna, Alberto Moravia, Elsa Morante, Anna Maria Ortese, and Pier Paolo Pasolini - had AIDS: this was the beginning of the end for him. Today, friends, poets and literary critics tell the story of the first openly gay writer of Italian literature, one of the symbols of a thriving cultural scene. They called him 'Italy's poète maudit', to which his snarky response would be: "If anything, I was blessed, blessed by the Muses".
L.C.D.B. - El documental
In the geographical center of Buenos Aires, a group of friends establish a self-managed space free of prejudices under the premise of the Buenos Aires Anti-fascist Action and the SHARP (Skin-Heads Against Racial Prejudice) culture, called La Cultura del Barrio (LCDB). La Cultura gathers all street cultures and promote various aspects of counter-cultural music, literature and other arts. Within this context, they open a boxing school as well, proposing another form of playing sports in response to a selfish, racist and homophobic system. LCDB thus becomes the first and only anti-fascist sports and social club in Latin America.
Across
This autobiographical film, standing on the borderline between reality and fiction, explores diverse forms of faith and spirituality. Director Irene Dorigotti guides the film dressed in a Boy Scout uniform – a reminder of her family heritage – as she travels through her native Italy and remote areas, meeting spiritual leaders and ordinary people. For her, these encounters mark decisive moments in her spiritual journey and in her discovery of the role that religion can play in the life of contemporary man. Poetic images of landscapes, dreamlike passages and fragments of personal history, together with poignant music, create a powerful statement about the nature of humanity.
A Different Score
Ngbanzo’s directorial debut is the first documentary devoted to the life and work of the late composer, pianist, singer, and pioneer of musical minimalism Julius Eastman. Previously unseen interviews and recordings from Eastman’s archive reveal the political dimension of Eastman’s practice, while extensive footage of Devonté Hynes rehearsing and performing a selection of Eastman-penned pieces offers an exhilarating showcase for the work of this still-too-little-known 20th-century master.
Pai Niang Niang: The Last Osmanthus Blossom
Pai Niang Niang (1972)—was thought to have not been captured on film and faded into obscurity. This work used the Broadway musical model to adapt the famous Chinese myth Legend of the White Snake. Bringing together Eastern and Western theatrical styles, the production combined Chinese traditional music, dance, costume and stage design with modern Western concepts. Despite this bold attempt, the resulting work was ahead of its time and was not a commercial success. This year in April, however, a partial film record of the performance was miraculously discovered. The restored surviving footage has become the finale of this documentary, Pai Niang Niang: The Last Osmanthus Blossom, bringing the saga to a flawless conclusion.

A short, low-budget documentary that follows a small jobbing band from the north of England called 'Hardwicke Circus' as they perform a gig and music workshop at 'Standford Hill HMP', a men's prison on the Isle of Sheppey in the south of England. Shot in Ben Archer's fly-on-the-wall 'gonzo' style of filmmaking and taken from the band's late-2019 tour of England's south coast, this documentary focuses on the joy of performance and music in an environment that does not often allow such expression. Bookended by short commentary from the band's lead singer Jonny Foster, 'Hardwicke Circus: The Prison Gig' is an uplifting ode to the power and necessity of art, even for those that society have deemed not to deserve it.
