A Sketch of Manners (Alfred Roch's Last Masquerade)
Alfred Roch, member of the Palestinian National League, is a politician with a bohemian panache. In 1942, at the height of WWII, he throws what will turn out to be the last masquerade in Palestine. Inspired by an archival photograph, A Sketch of Manners (Alfred Roch’s Last Masquerade) recreates an unconventional bon vivant aspect of Palestinian urban life before 1948. Posing silently for a group photo, the unmasked and melancholic pierrots accidentally personify the premonition of an uncertain future.
Al Haj Nejim
(Nadia), who was born and raised in (France), returns to (Iraq) to rediscover her roots and origins. During this journey, (Nadia) gradually uncovers the story of her grandfather, Haj (Najm) Al-Baqal, the owner of the date shop, and the man who was one of the prominent leaders of the revolution in (Najaf) against British colonialism in 1918. The film sheds light on the impact that Haj (Najm) Al-Baqal's struggle left on the people of (Najaf).
Etegan: Bashkir Legends In Song
The film is based on the Bashkir legend about seven girls who gave their lives defending homeland from marauding raiders. It shows the ancient Bashkirs' way of life and view of the universe through folk songs: Giants, idols, and the division of the world into the World of Angels, the World of The Living and the World of the Dead. Dying in an unequal battle, the girls go to the upper world and turn into stars of the Big Dipper, which Bashkirs name Etegan.
From Darkness Towards Light
Spanning three generations, the film depicts life in Copenhagen from the perspective of the working class. The film portrays the development of the city, the new opportunities arising and the improved living conditions created as the welfare state expands. ‘From darkness towards light’ is Denmark’s first-ever Social Democratic propaganda film, and it was part of the election campaign leading up to the local elections in 1929. Documentary shares the story of Captain John Woodlief leading a group of 35 English settlers to America. “It’s important to tell the story to set the record straight,” says Graham Woodlief, a descendant of the captain and the movie’s co-executive producer. He explains that educating people about this story would help Virginia “get its rightful recognition for this historic event.” Woodlief, as president of the nonprofit Virginia Thanksgiving Festival, promotes this account of the first American harvest-time celebration and educates the public on it. He first presented the idea of a documentary to WCVE PBS in hopes of educating more people about what he believes is the story of the very first Thanksgiving.
