The continual availability of news on our laptops, televisions and smartphones makes us perpetual witnesses to complex situations on the other side of the world. We can feel unease every day through the confrontation with presumed poverty and desperation. The news camera is not neutral; intentionally or unintentionally, those who are filmed are framed as victims. Before they know it, the social conscious viewer is dragged into a vortex of guilt and shame. With the large scale video installation Guilty Landscapes Verhoeven brings the reality of uncomfortable news images confrontingly close. He poses the question of whether a personal connection is possible between the viewer and the person being viewed. What if the news were to turn and look at its witnesses; what if the protagonists on the evening news were to look us in the eye?

I'm Coming Up
Ting’s first feature is a monumental documentation of a large-scale HDB (Housing and Development Board) flat in Jurong by portrayal of its corridors and interior balconies. The film seamlessly scales the building from bottom to top, traversing every available 'public' space in its ascent. Shot just before sunrise with few inhabitants to be seen, the film becomes solely occupied with the interplay between camera and architecture – the shifting tones, lights and shapes that emerge from movement. The soundtrack is derived from a live performance by Balbalab during the world premiere of the film at the Singapore International Film Festival on 28 November 2016. Balbalab is a collective of experimental musicians from Singapore exploring a variety of strategies toward electroacoustic improvisation. Their sonorous response uses field recordings mined from the same HDB block and then cut up, processed, and reassembled.

Een Gebeuren
The video installation „Een gebeuren“ is based on Ben d’Armagnac’s performance of the same name, which took place in Amsterdam on 14th June 1975. D’Armagnac occupied a glass cube with the dimensions of about 2x1x1 metres, painted white from the inside, together with about 2,000 freshly hatched flies; he began to scrape off the paint centimetre by centimetre in order to at least partially reveal the cube’s inside for the spectators. Gufler reconstructed d’Armagnac’s performance based on rudimentary documented material and conversations with d’Armagnac’s partner Louwrien Wijers. In his own version of “een gebeuren,” Gufler captures the events with a GoPro camera. Instead of documenting the slow appearance of a person behind a white surface the video shows the diligent process of laying bare and opening up from an inside perspective – an action, which Gufler completes by releasing the flies at the end of the performance and by which he also upgrades d’Armagnac’s own performance.

Seeing as how I (Adam, Producer/Director) am a Christian, I want the world to know what that means and why it is important to me. But I asked myself, how could I dare ask someone to listen to what I have to say if I'm not first willing to listen to them. This idea started a journey toward meeting new people in the hopes of better understanding the diversity of ideas that bombard us all when dealing with any sort of religious/spiritual interest. We approach people on the streets, go undercover, and meet people in their homes, all in the effort to learn more about what makes them tick. The whole crew discovers new things on this journey and we pass on those lessons for feedback. We are aiming for a feature length film because of the amount of content that we have already gotten and anticipate in finishing production. We also throw in some lighthearted scripted scenes to entertain.
