Young Pines
Young Pines
Young Pines grew out of three trips to Japan between May 2009 and November 2010. Invited to Japan for a series of film screenings, I began filming in Yokohama, Tokyo, and Kanazawa. Even in the big cities, I experienced how strongly the Japanese feel connected to nature and how they tend to see no contradiction between culture and nature. I found this stimulating and in harmony with some of my own impulses. I wanted to return and film more in other seasons. In Spring 2010 I visited Kamakura, Kyoto, and Nara, in November I went Northeast and filmed in Matsushima, Tono, Miyako in Atsumi, Yamadera, and Nikko. All of my film images have been filmed before the disaster of the Tsunami and Fukushima, but the final editing was done in the following months.

(Commissioned) Portrait of Las Vegas
(Commissioned) Portrait of Las Vegas
I’ve been to Las Vegas many times and have always experienced a familiar roller coaster of reactions to the city, from being fascinated and seeing it as a profound expression of grand historical forces and liberatory impulses to just seeing it as a totally fucking depressing place. I don’t think I’ve ever had such strong reactions to a city. This film is an expression of much of that and weaves together several elements: a visual portrait of Las Vegas; informal, verite-ish interviews with a wide range of interesting people we came across while shooting; archival images of the city from the 1950s and 60s; along with some first-person voice-over musings about the city and its history. My hope is that this film does justice to the endlessly fascinating, spectacularly libidinous, and deeply disturbing nature of Las Vegas and its history. —Sam Green

Piedra Roja
Piedra Roja
iedra Roja is a close-up look at how Chile's first 'hippie' rock festival (an imitation of Woodstock), profoundly affected Chilean society during a time of social and political upheaval--the inception of Salvador Allende's socialist government, the subsequent military coup d'etat, and Allende's suicide. The festival, widely condemned by the media as three days of drugs, violence and sex, became the scapegoat for both the left and the right to further political agendas. Emotional interviews with festival organizers and musicians illustrate how their involvement with the festival changed the courses of their lives as they dealt with backlash from both conservative Chileans and outraged government forces. Piedra Roja. laced with period music, was produced and filmed by one of the festival organizers.

Remembering Tomorrow
Remembering Tomorrow
Three women, unrelated to each other, live their usual day. Anya is getting ready for her prom. Lena spends her day at work managing plumbers and janitors. Pensioner Lyudmila preaches the Word of God. Only subtle visual parallels connect the heroines of the film. They are somewhat similar to each other. An action begun by one seems to be completed by another. Step by step, from dawn to dusk, from youth to old age. And a lived day turns into a lived life.
