High Hopes
High Hopes
In 1997-1998, many Bedouin Palestinian refugees living under Israeli Occupation were forcibly displaced by Israel to a garbage dump. During that entire period, the Oslo Peace Process was ongoing, with 'high hopes' for peace, while a plan existed to forcibly displace many Bedouin from Jerusalem and Ramallah. This calls into question Israel's commitment to peace, its willingness to allow a viable Palestinian state to come into existence, and its attitudes towards Palestinians generally. HIGH HOPES (with "High Hopes" as its soundtrack, donated by Pink Floyd), is made from AP/BBC archive material of the 1997-1998 displacements and the parallel expansion of Ma'ale Adumim settlement. The situation has grown worse during the current period, when talks again took place, as Israel both expanded settlements and formulated plans for the mass displacement of some 30,000 Bedouin Palestinian herders.

Phonautograph
Phonautograph
Phonautograph is a film exploring the human compulsion to articulate and visualize sound. Its narrative traces the history of capturing, preserving and reproducing acoustic signals, presenting material recorded on the early devices of Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville. Patented in 1857, the Phonautograph was an invention that transcribed sonic frequencies onto paper, from where they could be analyzed and studied graphically. For a long time people believed that the amount of information it “stored” was insufficient to recreate the actual sound, but in 2008 American sound engineers found a way to do just this. Through optically scanning the old phonautograms and playing them back at the correct speed, the voice of a man believed to be Scott de Martinville himself, could once again be heard. The words were recognized as lines from the French folk song Au Claire de la Lune, recorded in 1860, making it the oldest known recording of the human voice.

7 Tage im September
7 Tage im September
7 DAYS IN SEPTEMBER is the adventurous story of two exceptional mountaineers, Benedikt Böhm and his partner Sebastian Haag, trying to set a world record speed ascent to the 8,163-m peak of Manaslu in the Himalayas. It's a story of friendship and rivalry, and of their desire to risk everything, including family responsibilities. 7 DAYS IN SEPTEMBER also tells the tale of those who set out with the same vision, like mountaineer legends Silvio Mondinelli or Rémy Lécluse, but whose lives changed forever in a fatal avalanche catastrophe. The film is a personal exploration of one of the most tragic dramas in Himalayan mountaineering history. What drives people to risk their lives like this again and again? What does it mean for the bereaved to love a person whose passion seems to be contrary to all rationality?

Warren Miller's No Turning Back
Warren Miller's No Turning Back
Warren Miller's 2014 film, No Turning Back, pays homage to the 65 years of mountain culture and adventure filmmaking that has lead WME to every end of the winter world. We're taking a legacy that dates back to before skis had edges and mountains had condos and we're running with it to the steepest peaks around the globe and back to the Mom and Pop hills that define skiing and riding. Since he began creating films in 1949, Warren Miller has known that as skiers and riders, there's no need to look back, we have to continuously drive to keep our edge and chase the snow. This year, we prove that not much has changed when it comes to why it is these athletes tilt and turn down mountains and pray for storms. Sheer delight. Welcome this winter season and remember there's No Turning Back.

From A to B
From A to B
The title is an oblique reference to Warhol’s The Philosophy of Andy Warhol (From A to B and Back Again) where Warhol famously spoke of his understanding of death. He didn’t believe in it, he said. His work, perhaps as a result, is a constant celebration of presence. This piece, using a methodology diametrically opposed to Warhol’s own, revisits stray elements (a seagull, reflections of the filmmaker in the window, a blinking light and so on) that pass incidentally through that moment of monumental presence we experience in ‘Empire’.
